Japan’s Ayumi Morita defeated British no. 1 Laura Robson to advance to the second round of the WTA International tournament in Oeiras, Portugal.
Morita started the brighter of the two with an immediate break of Robson’s serve, and Robson could only manage one hold, and one break of Morita’s serve before relinquishing the first set 2-6.
It was a better start, relatively speaking, with double faults kicking off Robson’s first two service games, but strong holds kept things on serve in the second set.
But it was a brace of double faults, bringing her total to 10, that gave Morita the upper hand at the end of the second set to go 6-5 up.
Morita’s serving had been solid in this set, and despite losing one of her two match points, she despatched the British number one in a little short of 90 minutes.
