Kyle Edmund v Dudi Sela [LL] | H2H: Sela leads 1-0
Kyle Edmund will take to the court for the first time (in singles) since his run to the Australian Open semi-final, and also for the first time as the British No. 1. With Andy Murray still rehabbing his hip injury, Edmund will be steering the reigns for British Tennis for a while, and he is the quite literally the last man standing in the singles, with Jamie Murray (and Bruno Soares) off the blocks in the doubles.
Edmund gets lucky loser Dudi Sela after a raft of wthdrawals, and although the head to head is in the Israeli’s favour, they last met four years ago on grass. A lot, of course, has changed since then.
Sela is compact and this pretty speedy around the court, with a neat one-handed backhand and thanks to his doubles prowess, has some good feel at the net. For Edmind, returning from a slight hip injury from Australia which kept him out of the Davis Cup tie, and then a virus which kept him off the court until now.
He has at least had some time on the courts in California, getting a round of doubles in, but lost in the first round. A lot will depend on just how rusty the Yorkshireman is having not been in a competitive singles match since the end of January.
Sela’s speed around the court would suggest that Edmund is in for a lot of running. While he has developed a decent weapon with his serve and booming forehand, he will need to have a bit more variety in his toolbag.
On paper this is an easily winnable game but it could be right while he shakes off the rust to keep British singles hopes alive in the desert.
Prediction: Edmund in straight sets.
Edmund and Sela are scheduled on Stadium 4 at 11am (6pm GMT)
