- Petra Kvitova continues her comeback in fine style
- Faces British No. 2 Naomi Broady
BIRMINGHAM, UK – British No. 2 Naomi Broady earns herself a shot at the two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the second round of the Aegon Classic.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova made a triumphant start to her grass court campaign having only made her competitive comeback after a horror knife attack at her home last year. She had an emotional comeback in Paris opening up proceedings on Court Philippe Chatrier on the first day, but her relief at being back on the tour was short lived exiting in the second round.
After spending some time practicing on the hard courts back in the Czech Republic, she arrived in Birmingham on Thursday to start to prepare.
She said, after her match: “I think this first match on the grass was pretty good. I think that I served well and I played good shots from the baseline. I think that she served very well, especially first serve. And yeah, I mean I had good timing on the court today and I’m happy the way I played.
“It feels great. I mean I love playing on the grass. I love every movement on that. You know, it’s my favourite surface. I’m really happy to play on it again and be able to play here in Birmingham.”
Kvitova [WC/7] v Naomi Broady [WC] – First Meeting
In a battle of the wildcards, two of the tour’s taller players will face each other for the first time. After kicking off winning ways for the Brits in the draw, Naomi Broady earns herself court time with the two-time Wimbledon champion.
She said, after her match on Monday: “Just great experience, and again, if I go out there and play my game, I’m going to be looking to keep playing to my strengths. If I can keep serving well like I did today, that helps me out a lot, and again, mixing up the pace a lot and not giving my opponents any rhythm.
“I think all of the tour, the men’s and women’s, were emotional to see her when she came back in French Open as she was as well. And no, it’s great. It shows what a great person she is and a determined person and what a fighter she is as well. So she’s obviously got that on court and off court in her life, and I think it’s great that she’s back.”
We can expect the little yellow fluffies to be hit within an inch of their lives if both keep up their serving as they have so far, but Broady will not be afraid to try and few things to disrupt Kvitova’s rhythm.
However, it is a tough ask for the Brit even allowing for Kvitova’s time away from the court. Experience at the top level will most likely carry the Czech through, but Broady has it in her to go toe-to-toe with the equally big server.
Prediction: Kvitova in straight sets.
